History of Cape Argus Cycle Tour
In 1977 Bill Mylrea and John Stegmann created Big Ride-in to get attention for people that they need cycle paths in Cape Town. Later on, from that idea Peninsula Marathon was born. The Big Ride-in was successful and attracted many people as well as Mayor of Cape Town. This was a start of new area of Cape Argus Cycle Tour next year in 1978 in Cape Town.
The first race of Cape Argus was held in 1978 and the first winner was Lawrence Whittaker from South Africa. The tour started in Castle on Strand Street and ended up in Camps bay. The first tour was attended by 525 cyclists and this was the start of series of Cape Argus Cycle tour called Peninsula Marathon first. Since then cycle tour was increasing by number of entrants as well as finishers and the time record started to break year by year. Also more international cyclist came and joined this beautiful cycle tour.
The first international winner of Cape Argus Cycle Tour was Michael Andersson from Sweden in 1995 during near-perfect weather conditions. The first and only international woman cyclist to win Cape Argus was Jennie Stenerhag also from Sweden in “Tour of Storms”. Other overseas winners were from Germany, Norway, Australia, Italy and England.
The tour is usually held on second Sunday of March and well known cyclists such as Jan Ulrich, Miguel Indurain and Lance Armstrong compete. Jan Ulrich has already attended Tour de France, Spanish Vuelta as well as Giro d’Italia. Miguel Indurain has won five Tour de France titles in a row and twice Giro d’Italia. He attends Cape Argus as part of his retirement time. Probably the most famous cyclist Lance Armstrong has also attended Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour.
One of the cyclists will be the owner of Around About Cars – Monika Moser. This will be her first time and all office will be cheering for her. We believe that she will finish the tour at good place.
