The Heritage Day, also called National Braai Day, is a national public holiday and conduces to remember the own roots and where you come from. This is celebrated by friends and families with a typical South African Braai. On a public holiday it is always good to go outside and to do something. Here are some activities and events that you should not miss on Heritage Day.

Heritage Month AWOL Township Bicycle Tour (September)
AWOL Tours gives ten percent discount on every bicycle tour through the townships and all because of Heritage Day. These tours lead you to Masiphumelele, which is next to Noordhoek, and offers you an insight to the real live in the townships. During the ride you will stop at a traditional healer, called Sangoma, during weekdays at Masivelani Crèche and you will visit different artists. Your tour ends with a delicious Braai from a butcher in Nongoloza.

Artscape Heritage Festival (18. – 30. September 2014)

 

The Artscape Heritage Festival gives you the opportunity to celebrate from Thursday the18th of September until Tuesday the 30th of September the South African culture with dance, theater and musicals. With this the people are paying tribute to the different folks and positive happenings of the past. Un-mute, They Died Singing, Biko’s Quest and Rainbow Scars are responsible for heating up the atmosphere.

Heritage Day at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (22. – 27. September)
In the week from the 22nd of September until the 27th of September, the National Botanical Garden offers two hour guided tours through the whole garden. From Monday until Friday these tours start at 10 am and 14 pm with an extra guided tour on Tuesday at 11 am and on Saturday there will be one tour at 10 am and all of them start at gate 1. The visitors get information about the UNESCO world natural heritage itself and the parks history.
The guided tours are for free, but you have to pay the entrance fee, which is R50 for adults, R25 for South African students and R10 for children between 6 and 17 years. On Tuesday there will be free entry for the younger ones, seniors and members of the Botanical Garden. Heritage Day at the High Five Kitesurf, Surf und S.U.P School (24. September)
You can celebrate the Heritage Day in the nature at Blouberg beach with the High Five Kiteboard School that is open from sunrise until sunset and offers 2-for-1 or 3-for-2 specials. So you can learn surfing or stand-up-paddling with a good discount and also you can be part of a three day kitesurf lessons, where you get 10 percent discount. If you book a single private kitesurf lesson, you will get a voucher for a free S.U.P. lesson.

Heritage Day Hip-Hop Party at the Foreign Exchange (FOREX) (24. September)
Wednesday night you can party at the Foreign Exchange Bar in Observatory with the device “Music is My Heritage Party”, where you will find a mix of a lot of hip hop artists like Kid Cleva, Thulz, DJs Aso Tandwa, The Ultm8, Pele and the live acts MCs Mav Bo-Tee and Q Dee. Also there will be a comedy program with Shimmy Isaac and wannabe comedians can show their talent afterwards. The whole event is organized by RapitUP Events, Cape Audio College, Hajila Movement, Bronze BiBi Cyriaque and Emphis Strate Designs. The party starts at 20:30 pm and the entrance fee is about R25.

 

Heritage Day Braai at the Castella Amare Restaurant (24. September)
This is perfect for all people that want to have a Braai at Heritage Day, but do not have the facilities to do it at home by themselves. At the Castella Amare Restaurant at Melkbo beach you can choose between different Braai plates. The one comprises BBQ chicken, pineapple kebab, boerewors sosaties, rump steak medallions, lamb, vegetarian kebab, goat cheese and caramelized onion bread. The other comprises prawns, sosaties, calamari und the grilled fish of the day. To all of them you will get sides like couscous salad, vegetable salad, Caesar salad and warm potato salad. Included are one glass of wine and a second portion of Braai. The little ones can enjoy cheeseburger, chips and vegetables or a gourmet boerie.

Heritage Day Crossroad Blues Live Music Night at The Odyssey Gastropub (24. September)
This Wednesday you will feel the South African flair suitable for the Heritage Day and there will be live musicians like Farrell Adams, Maurice Paliaga and James Kibby. This music night starts at 19:30 pm and besides the good music you will find traditional South African food, delicious cocktails and if you dress up in a special way to celebrate the Heritage Day you will get a cocktail for free.

Heritage Day Braai Buffet Special at the Aquila Private Game Reserve (24. September)
At the Aquila Private Game Reserve all guests will get a free all-you-can-eat-buffet in Wednesday. In this lodge with two hours distance to Cape Town you will find the Big Five and there are two tours during the day that will lead you between two or three hours through the game reserve. During the day there is an included visit of the in-house Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) and a lunch. The ones that stay longer can enjoy a luxury accommodation with a typical South African dinner and breakfast.

Heritage Day at The Backyard Grill (24. September)
From 12 am until the end of the day you can come with your friends and family to Sea Point and enjoy a good Braai. There is a wind-protected corner, where you can compose your personal Braai plate.
The costs are between R100 and R180 depending on the meat you choose and the sides cost between R40 and R50.

The Hermitage Restaurant at the Hazendal Vineyard offers a delicious Braai lunch with plates that include lamb, boerewors, chicken, corn cobs and garlic bread with sides like Greek salad and potato salad. The little ones can enjoy juices and boerewors for just R45.

Heritage Day at the Avontuur Vineyard (24. September)
The guests can enjoy a delicious lunch with a plate with Joubert&Monty Biltong and different kinds of cheese, fresh baked bread with spices and a glass of Pinotage. Every plate is for two persons and costs about R150 and also there will be a wine and biltong tasting for R50. Included in the R150 are two glasses of wine.

Heritage Day Live Music at The Crypt Jazz Restaurant (24. September)
Celebrate the Heritage Day with Cape Town’s musicians at the Crypt Jazz Restaurant next to the St. Georges Cathedral. This Wednesday evening from 19 pm until 22 pm you can listen to the sounds from the gypsy-jazz and Balkan band Sharena Sol with the well-known musicians Dave Ledbetter, Petrus de Beer, Stanislav Angelov and Dave Ridgway. On site the guests can order snacks or small meals.

Heritage Day Braai at the Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyard (24. September)
The Leopard’s Leap Vineyard works this Heritage Day together with the Braai specialist Weber and is located in Franschhoek. During this Braai events the guests can learn from specialist Shirley Guy, how to get the best from your grill. The visitors can try chicken, rump steak, sheet ripped belly, lamb and fish. Included is the famous Harvest Table with delicious sides and deserts and for the little ones there is a kids menu. The lunch starts at 11:30 am.

Kidz Adventure Camp: Potjiekos-Challenge (24. September)
Visit the Burger Sports Complex in Parow North to meet the Kidz Adventure Cap, who organizes a potjes challenge. The different cooks try to win the title and the visitors can listen to live music or watch wrestling. For the first 20 people everything is arranged. The other ones have to bring their own pans, wood and chairs.

 

Heritage Day Concert at the Camphill Village West Coast (24. September)
Take a picnic basket with you and enjoy the rock concert. This charity event in Klein Dassenberg will create a great atmosphere with artists like Rocksta and Valiant Swart and a lot of other local bands and musicians. The show starts at 13 pm and ends at 18:30 pm.

Heritage Day Concert at the V&A Waterfront (24. September)
At the V&A Waterfront you can enjoy a free concert and spend a comfortable Wednesday. The North Wharf Marina combines traditional and afro fusion elements to create a special atmosphere. This award-winning band took part at a lot of events in Cape Town and also at international ones.

 

Heritage Day Art Sale in den Bright Studios (24. – 28. September)

From Wednesday until Sunday you can visit the Bright Creative Space and Studio from 9 am until 16 pm and find oil paintings with fruit bowls and animals and much more. The artists are students or local artists, who sell their products for R100 until R19.000.
Springboks VS Wallabies Castle Lager Rugby Championship Match (27. September)
On Saturday the Spingboks will play a rugby championship game at the Newlands Stadium. The match starts at 17:05 pm against the boys from down under.

Slippery Spoon’s Braai Day Spit Luncheon at the Joostenberg Wine Farm (28. September)
On Sunday you can enjoy a great lunch prepared at the fireplace. Johnny Hamman savors the Heritage Day with a five course menu.
