Tri Nations Rugby South Africa

Cape TownWith the super 14 coming to a close it is safe to say that the southern hemisphere’s rugby season is officially underway. The next big thing on the schedule is the Tri Nations Rugby Tournament and diehard fans will be booking flights and looking into car hire hoping to follow their favourite team to glory.

The Tri Nations Rugby Tournament is an international rugby fixture which is held once a year between South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The tournament is held on a home and away basis with each team playing the others three times. Tri Nations Rugby Tournament is a highly contested tournament and the highlight of the southern hemisphere’s rugby calendar.

This year’s Tri Nations Rugby tournament kicks off on the 10th of July in New Zealand so those of you still hoping to get a deal on your flights or car hire had better act fast as it is sure to be a great one!

The fixtures for the 2010 Tri Nations Rugby Tournament are as follows:

July 10 - New Zealand v South Africa, Auckland
July 17 - New Zealand v South Africa, Wellington
July 24 - Australia v South Africa, Brisbane
July 31 - Australia v New Zealand, Melbourne
Aug 07 - New Zealand v Australia, Christchurch
Aug 21 - South Africa v New Zealand, Johannesburg
Aug 28 - South Africa v Australia, Pretoria
Sept 04 - South Africa v Australia, Bloemfontein

The winner of the Tri Nations Rugby Tournament is determined by a points system. Each team is awarded points according to whether they win draw or lose. The points work as follows:

4 points for a win
2 points for a draw
0 points for a loss

The teams can also earn "Bonus points" during a match and these will count towards deciding the winner of the Tri Nations Rugby Tournament. It is possible to score up to two bonus points per match. The bonus points are awarded as follows:

The attacking bonus point- this is awarded for scoring four or more tries in the match, regardless of the final outcome.

The defending bonus point- this is awarded for losing by seven points or less.

This year’s Tri Nations Rugby Tournament will be seen as a particularly important as it will be used as a dry run for the Rugby World Cup which will be held in New Zealand next year. The first two games will be particularly important for South Africa because it will simulate the conditions they are likely to experience in the world cup. If they can beat New Zealand on their home ground during the Tri Nations Rugby Tournament it will give them a great psychological advantage over the all blacks for the world cup.
But South Africa must not focus all of its attention on the all blacks. The Australian team have not won the Tri Nations Rugby Tournament recently and will be fighting to get back on top. South Africa is going to have to work hard to retain its Tri Nations Rugby crown and they are going to need the support of their fans to do it. So go buy a ticket, book a flight reserve that car hire for that much needed road trip to Bloem, just make sure you are there!
